What is the Deal With Cruise Ducks?

Cruise Ducks for April Event
Did you know that there is a “thing” called Cruise Ducks? I didn’t. This thing is that cruisers bring rubber ducks to hide. Or spend time searching for hidden ducks. Apparently it started in 2018 with 10-year-old girl named Abby as a gesture to make other passengers smile. Now it is a bit of a phenomenon.
Steve and I didn’t find any ourselves, but saw several other passengers who found them. A friend of mine told me about them after I posted my first cruise pictures to Facebook. Now I want to join in on the fun. This is going to be MY April Event.
Just What are Cruise Ducks?
Passengers bring the cruise ducks on board. All of the ones I saw were about two inches, but I understand they can be any size. They can be decorated or plain yellow. The ducks are hidden all around the ship, but there are some rules about where you shouldn’t hide yours. You shouldn’t hide them in pools or hot tubs because it could be a hazard. Don’t hide them in the shops. You wouldn’t want anyone to get in trouble for shoplifting. And finally don’t hide them anywhere that might lead to it falling into the ocean. Littering isn’t cool. Even if your duck is.
Why do I Want to Bring a Cruise Duck?
Initially I thought about using the Cruise Duck phenomenon for some low-key marketing. I wasn’t sure if it would be appropriate though, so I was waffling about it. When I did some research though, I was happy to find that attaching information about who hid the cruise duck is part of the tradition.
We designed some business card-sized information about the website. Then we bought some tape and ribbon. And finally ordered 50 two-inch cruise ducks from Amazon. The only thing I’m missing now is the card stock. Getting that tomorrow. Now I’m getting excited about hiding them.
How to Get a Cruise Duck
I understand that some ships have the Cruise Ducks for sale in their shops. We didn’t see any on our ship, so you can’t always count on that. If you want to participate, you might have to prepare in advance. A quick search says that I can find rubber ducks in my area at Walmart, Target, and Dollar Tree. You can find them online at Amazon, Etsy, Oriental Trading Company, and Pens.com. If you are feeling really into it, you can even decorate them yourself.
I’m going to attach my info with a ribbon, and maybe add tape so it doesn’t blow off. The ducks I ordered all look different so I don’t need to decorate them. They have various styles, colors, and decorations. And they are SO cute!
Cruise Duck Activities
My research says that some people trade cruise ducks on the ship. Some leave contact information as well as information about themselves for the person who finds it. You can keep the duck you find if you like. I think it’s good luck! You can also hide it again for someone else to find. Whatever you decide to do with your ducks, I hope you have fun.
Conclusion
I think the cruise duck tradition is a fun way to explore the ship and connect with other passengers. I even joined the Facebook Cruising Ducks ™ -Original group that was recommended by The Points Guy https://thepointsguy.com/guide/cruising-ducks/
